Tortoises are magnificent creatures. They have been on the earth for more than 200 million years. They evolved before mammals, birds, crocodiles, snakes and even lizards. Turtles and tortoises are the only reptiles that have a shell. Their bodies are protected by a shell on top and underneath. Tortoises can retract their heads and all their limbs including their tails into their shells when they feel threatened or attacked by predators. They have extremely strong mouths but no teeth instead they have horny type beaks. Most Tortoises eat both plants and meat. Some kinds eat mostly plants, but other kinds eat mostly small animals. Some Tortoises live in the sea and others live in fresh water. Tortoises have well all round vision and a very good sense of smell. Tortoise can live a very long time to the ripe old age of 150. However, the average age a tortoise can live to ranges from 90 to 150 years.
