I want to tell you some information about Australia and I want to start with Australias geographical position. Australia is situated in the southern hemisphere and that's why there is summer, when we have winter and there is winter, when we have summer. It is interesting to know that January is the hottest month in Australia. Overall, the climate in Australia is dry and warm.
Because of Australias geographical position it is separated from many countries and thus providing an abundance of original and interesting animals such as dingoes (wild dogs), koala bears, kangaroos, tiger quoll, echidna, etc. The kangaroo and koala have got a pouch in which they carry their cubs. There are many birds in the country, too. One can see parrots and cockatoos. The emu is the most interesting bird in Australia. It is big and can't fly.
The capital of the country is Canberra. The city became the capital in 1927. The curious fact is that there are no industrial plants in Canberra. The population of Canberra is about 300,000 people. The next four major cities include Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Sydney and Melbourne are industrial and Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are the ports of the country.
There are a lot of places of interest in Australia, but the most famous is probably Sydney Opera House. Nowadays at Sydney Opera House you can enjoy a performance, dine at one of the restaurants or take a tour of the building, which encompasses theatres, studious, a concert hall, exhibition rooms, and a cinema. There are also such places as Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Kakadu National Park and many others.
Not many people talk about the natives, Australian Aborigines. There are about 500 different Aboriginal peoples in Australia, each with their own language and territory. Today more than half of all Aboriginals live in towns, often on the outskirts in terrible conditions. When people came to Australia, Australian Aborigines began to suffer from them. Newcomers took their lands and properties, often killed them, some natives died from the dieses people outside the continent brought. In just over one hundred years from the first invasion of their land, the number of native Australians were reduced from up to an estimated one million to only 60,000. Today they still face racist attitudes, and there are periodic incidents of violence towards them. Most of them live in poor conditions, which leads to deaths and diseases.
To sum it up, Australia is a very unique country with its own culture and history. I think everyone should visit it at least once.
