The monument was erected on the bank of Vologda in 1987 on the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture. Sculptor Vyacheslav Klykov received the State Prize for him. The composition consists of 4 figures: Batiushkov himself, his horse, a peasant girl with a pipe and Athena Pallas. Each has its own allegorical meaning.

The poet does not sit on a horse, but stands in front of her, clutching a paper scroll in her hands. He is dressed in a military uniform, with cavalry boots on his feet. Konstantin Batyushkov participated in the battles with Napoleon, was wounded, twice awarded orders. But after the war he left the service for the sake of poetry, that's why the head of a war horse was sulk.
