Why do you think: a) The poem starts and finishes with a question? b) The main character asks the question in the last line? c) Sometimes the sentence starts on one line and finishes on the next? d) The thief says Life39;s tough? e) The thief sighs when seeing his / her reflection in the mirror? STEALING The most unusual thing Ive ever stole? A snowman. Midnight. He looked magnificent; a tall, white mute beneath the winter moon. I wanted him, a mate with a mind as cold as the slice of ice within my own brain. I started with the head. Better off dead than giving in, not taking what you want. He weighed a ton; his torso, frozen stiff, hugged to my chest, a fierce chill piercing my gut. Part of the thrill was knowing that children would cry in the morning. Lifes tough. Sometimes I steal things I don39;t need. I joy-ride cars to nowhere, break into houses just to have a look. Im a mucky ghost, leave a mess, maybe pinch a camera. I watch my gloved hand twisting the doorknob. A stranger39;s bedroom. Mirrors. I sigh like this Aah. It took some time. Reassembled in the yard, he didnt look the same. I took a run and booted him. Again. Again. My breath ripped out in rags. It seems daft now. Then I was standing alone among lumps of snow, sick of the world. Boredom. Mostly Im so bored I could eat myself. One time, I stole a guitar and thought I might learn to play. I nicked a bust of Shakespeare once, flogged it, but the snowman was the strangest. You don39;t understand a word Im saying, do you? Carol Ann Duffy
Задать свой вопросa) The poem does not suggest an answer, it rather puts a question and also
asks the reader for personal response.
b) This question can make the reader think about him/ herself.
c) This, as well as, irregular rhythm and absence of rhyme makes the poem
rip out in rags. It seems to be a typical device used by the poet to make the poem
very emotional but lacking harmony.
d) He/she probably imagines himself talking to the children who would cry in
the morning. This is the thiefs philosophy, his own moral standards, which are
outside societys values and beliefs. His/her life is tough, so he/she wants children to
see real world which is an equivalent to his own, full of loneliness, suffering.
e) He/she sighs seeing a ghost, echo of the snowmans image, outsider, a person
rejected by society. What he sees is sad.
