Londoners admire Lord Byron because one of the most famous English Romantic poets was born in London in 1788. His poetry is wide-ranging: lyrics and couplet satires, poems and plays. Childe Harolds Pilgrimage (1812-18) and Don Juan (1819-24) became his best known and most acclaimed works. His life was rather controversial, but his character and charm were impressed everyone who known him. He was not only a great poet, but also a prominent public figure in Regency England. Besides he supported the Greeks against the Turks and took an active part in the Greek struggle. Lord Byron was a hero in Greece. His heart was buried there. His body was brought back to England. And only 145 years after his death, in 1969, a memorial was placed in the Poets Corner of Westminster Abbey.
