When I had heard (Past Perfect) his knock I went (Past Simple) to the door and opened (Past Simple) it but I did not recognize (Past Simple negative form) him at first because I was not wearing (Past Continuous negative form) my glasses.

Past Perfect is used to tell about the action, which happened before the other action in the past.

Past Simple is used to tell about the actions, which took place one after another.

Past Continuous is used to explain that at the particular moment in the past he/she was without his/her glasses.
