The first part of the first sentence is Past Simple. The second part of the sentence is Past Perfect. The second sentence is in Past Simple.

 Past Simple is used to show an action in past. Past Simple is formed with the help of the suffix ed. (to invite invited). Irregular verbs take their second forms. (to be was, to do did).

Past Perfect is formed with the help of past tense of the auxiliary verb to have (had) and the third form of the verb.
