While the artist was drawing the picture, the children looked at him. It was snowing hard when they went to the mountains to ski. I could not go away because it was raining hard and I didnt have an umbrella.

The first parts of the sentences are Past Continuous. The second parts of the sentences are Past Indefinite.

Past Continuous is formed with the help of the second form of the auxiliary verb to be was / were and with the help of the suffix ing. Was is used for singular and were is used for plural.

Past Indefinite is formed with the help of the suffix ed for regular verbs and irregular verbs take their second forms.
