The is definite article. Definite article is used with nouns that are already known.

There is a book on the table. Give me the book.

 We use definite article with singular nouns and with plural nouns.

The rose, the games.

We use definite article with nouns which are only. The sun, the moon.

We use the in names of country in which there is united. The United Kingdom.
