We use Past Continuous in the first Sentence. Past Continuous is formed with the past form of the auxiliary verb to be was, were. We add the suffix ing to verb.

We use Past Indefinite and Past Perfect in the second sentence. Yesterday is the keyword of Past Indefinite. Already is the keyword of Past Perfect. Past Indefinite is formed with the help of the suffix ed (for regular verb). When verb is irregular we use the second form of the verb.
