Childhood of the future author of popular works was held in the small town of Hannibal on the bank of the Mississippi River. His family was never rich. When Samuel was 12 years old, his father died. Care for the family fell on the shoulders of the boy and his elder brother. So Sam began to earn his own bread. In search of money, he traveled a lot, changing professions: he was an employee in the publishing house, soldier and pilot, he was looking for gold and silver in the deserts, then became a journalist.

William Faulkner wrote that Mark Twain was "the first truly American writer, and we have since been his heirs," and Ernest Hemingway believed that all contemporary American literature came from one book by Mark Twain, entitled "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn ".
