Higher medical education in Great Britain may occur at a university consisting of a number of faculties among them - the commonest is a faculty of medicine and at a medical college or school. Of 23 medical schools in the United Kingdom nine are located in London and the rest are situated all over Britain.The first and most importent things to be said is that the competition for places in UK medical schools is very intense.Many students apply for the relatevery few places available.Besides,the medical student begins his training at a medical school after initial instruction in Greek and Latin.
Medical education in Great Britain provides two major phases:the premedical courses and the medical ,or clinical ,course.Each of these courses should include laboratory periods of from two hours to six hours a week for a full academic year.The medical school begin their work with the study of the structure of body and its formation :anatomy,histology and embryology.Soon thereafter come the studies related to function : i.e. physiology,biochemistry,pharmacology and biophysics. Usually after the microscopic study of normal tissues has begun ,the student is introduced to pathologic anatomy,bacteriology,immunology,parasitology - in short - to the agents of diseases and the changes they cause in structure and function of the tissues.
