The London Underground, or the Tube asit is often called, is the oldest undergroundtrain network in the world.

 Opened in1863 there are a total of eleven lines, 270stations and over 400 km of track, makingit the third longest subway system in theworld.

 The London Underground carriesover a billion passengers a year, or about 3million every day.

 The deepest stations areover 60 metres below the surface, however 55% of the tracks run above it.

 

In the 1830s Londons authorities had theidea of linking the centre of London withthe large train stations which were locatedfarther away.

Over the course of history, the size of thetunnels changed, so that today, twodifferent types of trains travel across thecity.

 Modern escalators bring passengersto the deep level stations of the tube.

 TheJubilee Line is the last line to be built.

 Itwas opened in 1979 in honour of QueenElizabeths 25th anniversary as monarch.

In the 1990s it was extended eastwards tothe Docklands.

 

The London Underground normallyoperates daily between 5 a.m. andmidnight.

 Some lines stay openthroughout the night on special occasions, like New Years Eve.

 London Undergroundstations can get very crowded during theweekday rush hours.

 Even though thesystem is so large, trains usually run ontime.

 Over the decades undergroundstations have been modernized.

 In thepast years many have been equipped withWi-Fi access to make journeys ascomfortable as possible.

 The well-knownsymbol of the London Underground, a redcircle with a blue bar, was developed atthe beginning of the 20th century and hasnot changed much since then.

 
Some of Londons Underground stationsare buildings which have a specialarchitectural value.

 Many original stationshave been restored and look similar to theway they did over a century ago.

 
Although so many people use theunderground every day, the safety recordof the system is very good.

 Most deathsoccur as suicides.

 

The London Underground also facesenvironmental problems. 

 Because thewater level of the Thames is constantly onthe rise, thousands of cubic metres ofwater must be pumped out of some of theunderground stations every day.
