One of Londons most important museums is the National Gallery. Its rich collection consists of over 2300 European paintings from the thirteenth to the nineteenth centuries. The idea of opening the gallery belongs to King George IV, who did not want Britain to be left behind many European cities which had opened impressive art museums to the public, such as the Louvre in Paris, the Vatican Museums in Rome and the Uffizi in Florence at the beginning of the nineteenth century. First the National Gallery opened to the public on 10 May 1824, housed in Angersteins former townhouse at No. 100 Pall Mall. As the collection growed bigger, it moved into another building (the present building, the third to house the National Gallery, was designed by William Wilkins from 1832 to 1838). Before the World War II the paintings were evacuated to various locations in Wales and returned to Trafalgar Square only in 1945. Nowadays you can see works by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Turner, Renoir and Van Gogh for free because the pictures in the collection belong to the public There are free guided tours, audio guides available in multiple languages and free family activities for children of all ages at the Gallery.
