People did not straight go into space. First they sent the dogs there. They were Belka and Strelka. Belka and Strelka were trained a lot before the flight. They were chosen because they were friendly, intelligent and active animals. These dogs flew into space on the 19^th of August in 1960. The flight lasted 25 hours. The animals stood during the flight well. The only drawback was a small stress, which the animals easily overcame after the flight. This gave scientists the confidence that people can also fly into space.
