William the Conqueror was the Duke of Normandy when he decided to attack England and take the throne. The point is childless King Edward the Confessor promised William to make him the successor. But after King Edwards death one of his relatives Harold Godwinson succeeded as a King. William came from Normandy with the large army and defeated Harolds forces in the Battle of Hastings in 1066. In the same year he became King of England.

William the Conqueror built the White Tower as a fortified construction and also served as a chapel for the King and his representatives. The Tower of London was started to build by William I and its considered to be a defensive complex. St Pauls Cathedral, one of the greatest English churches, was built in XVII century. Also Westminster Abbey is one of the oldest churches in England that was built during the Edward the Confessors rein. Canterbury Cathedral that is located in Kent was built in XI century. Now it is the cathedral of the leader of the Church of England.
