1) The judge sent him in the Chateau d'If and no prisoner could ever leave that castle alive.
2) They kept him in a small dark underground cell where Edmond was afraid of going mad.
3) Faria was a wise priest also prisoned in that castle and one day could get to the cell of Edmond. They became friends and he taught Edmond a lot about languages and science.
4) Faria fell seriously ill and was going to die. Edmond was his only friend, he looked after the old man and saved his life. That's because Faria said him about his treasure.
5) Edmond saw that the guards had put the body of dead Faria in a bag. He understood that only dead people had the chance to leave the prison and decided to take the place of Faria in his bag.
6) The guards carried the bag outside and tied a heavy stone around his feet, than they picked up the bag and threw it into the sea.
7) Though the heavy stone pulled Edmond down, he could open the bag from inside and cut the stone off. Luckily he was a sailor and wasn't afraid of sea, so he came to the surface.
